Yes, men, girls CAN be gamers, and they’re just as good as you!
Unfortunately, now more than ever, men use games as an “outlet” to take their testosterone driven rage to somewhere where they won’t be beaten up when they talk smack. This means that racists and sexists are prevalent in these violent communities. It is all too common in online games to be harassed by men. Games like Call of Duty, League of Legends, and Pokemon are notorious for this behavior
Women often feel uncomfortable in these situations, leading to a substantially lower women player base in nearly all AAA games. Now more than ever, women need to feel welcomed into these communities. I think that our attitudes as gamers needs to change, starting with straight white males.
Men: next time you see a hear a feminine voice, or see a feminine skin in a game, greet that person with kindness and respect, no matter the circumstances. Let that person have your spot on the battle bus. Don’t harass/kill that person. It’s the least we can do. Do not treat them like you would a “bro,” they are pioneers, playing in a space where women are not normally allowed. It is dangerous, and it likely takes a mental toll, so we need to be accommodating so more women will play with me.
I am a nice guy. I treat women kindly, when I hear one with a mic, I immediately request to be their friend. I am nice to them, I talk to them, I ask for their age, their interests I will ask if she is single if things are going well. I really try to get to know them. I will happily risk my life to save them, to show how committed I am. to show them I am putting the effort in to make them feel comfortable.
Trust me, NOTHING is more rewarding that listening to her breathing grow more rapid as things get intense. Imagining her pursing her lips and furrowing her brow in concentration is so enjoyable. She hunches over, pressing keys furiously. Her pulse speeds up. Mine does too. My new girl friend is in danger. THIS is what gaming is for.
In between those moments, make sure to get to know her a little better! Ask her if she has any friends who are girls that also game! Talk to her about hygiene. tell her about the new body wash you got, ask her what shampoo she wears.
If more gamers were like me, more women would play games. Gamers, please do your part. Please take it easy on women. Please let them win so they will play more.
