Bloons Tower Defense was first released in 2007, since this first game, the series has produced 6 mainline games, with Bloons Monkey City, Bloons Adventure Time Tower Defense and Bloons Tower Defense Battles being spin-offs. The most recent Bloons game was Bloons Tower Defense 6. This is the game we will primarily be focusing on.
Bloons Tower Defense (Shortened to BTD) 6 released in 2018, it currently has over 1 million downloads on the Google play store alone, with a user rating of 4.8/5, based on ~161,000 reviews.
However, the almost comical art style of Bloons, hides a dark secret. This being that, the game is teaching kids to be violent. The violent intent isn’t immediately noticeable, due to the large abstraction between what we see in the real world, and what you play in the game.
At the core of what it is, a tower defense game is a warzone representation. You are defending against an oncoming threat. For example, the Soviets defending their cities from the nazis etc.
Popping balloons and fighting nazis is clearly very different. However, they are only a mere abstraction apart. The entire concept of a tower defense game is the same as defending a front on a battlefield.
Most, however, aren’t aimed towards kids, BTD 6 is one of the most popular examples of a tower defense game aimed at kids. This can not be allowed to continue.
We can not have our kids being taught violence via video games, because it will only lead us down a darker path.
Save lives, ban violent video games of all forms
